ParticipantI work in a skilled nursing facility and work with patients with dementia, alzheimers, MS, and other progressive neurological disorders. The food system of course is awful (pasta, bread, sugary drinks, and dessert at every meal), and I can’t help but wonder, hypothetically speaking, if their diets were to be completely changed to optimal sugar-free, low carb, anti-inflammatory if cases would completely reverse? It just absolutely BREAKS my heart to see them declining everyday eating junk and watching their families see their loved ones deteriorate. Does it depend on the individual and how far their disease has gone? I’ve heard of many people now-a-days who have lost their parent/s or loved ones to dementia, alzheimers, etc. and said that it does not genetically run in their family. Makes me wonder how our modern world contributes to these diseases. My mom eats a very high sugar diet, and I see her memory starting to go here and there and it makes me SO nervous for her. I’ve had conversations with her about my concerns and she isn’t at a place where she wants to make a change. But I’ve always wondered holistically speaking what it would take to reverse these conditions.

KeymasterI cant say if they will be completely reversed but I CAN say that their symptoms will GREATLY improve, less organs would need to be removed and far less complications if surgeries are required. It breaks my heart too!
It definitely depends on how progressed the disease is. Unfortunately, Stage 4 cancer cant be reversed with diet at that point. Brain diseases are actually somewhat easier to improve just by consuming omega 3 fats and a diet low in starch and processed foods and high in fiber, healthy fats and lean protein! Things like Choline are important too!!

ParticipantWow ok! That’s definitely good to know because that question comes into my mind literally every time I am with my patients. I want to take their food tray and run with it!! It seems the most mentally “gone” patients I have are the ones who eat the most sugar and sweets.

Keymasterhahaha I’d want to do the same thing!! Unfortunately dieticians create the food plans in hospitals and they are trained without any education into organic and how food impacts our health.

KeymasterIt really is! It was the same case with my grandpa who had lymphoma. They were feeding him ENSURE (so horrible), rainbow jello and sugary yogurt cups. We all know sugar feeds cancer so it was KILLING me watching him eat it!

ParticipantMarla, NOOOOOOO. That is my nightmare as well!! All my clients drink Ensure too, which is just MSG, corn, water, and added vitamins. Soooooooo sad!!! D: Why not give fruits and veggies? Even a blended fruit drink with some added veggies (although still high in sugar) would be SO much better and I’m sure anyone would drink that!

ParticipantHi Marissa!
It also breaks my heart for any one who has dementia, MS or any other progressive neurological disorders. Our health care system is flawed in so many ways and its too bad that something such as proper nutrition is lacking in these people lives.Perhaps they should hire a holistic nutritionist to make meal plan instead of dietitians.October 14, 2020 at 2:58 am #1634Marissa Alphonse
ParticipantThat would be WONDERFUL Bibi! If you mention to anyone in our dietary world or even a medical doctor about how food affects the body, they don’t believe you! It’s so brain washed! As someone who STUDIES food and the human body how could our education system lack teaching our doctors/dieticians about that? So crazy! I agree with you!
