If someone has low white blood cells after chemotherapy, should we try to be supporting our Th1 immune system or Th2?

I normally don’t work with individuals who have cancer. That being said, there is a lot of literature talking about low WBC and our immune system. Of course, it will vary from person to person however the info I am sharing below seems to be pretty consistent. It gets a bit technical but hopefully explains why you want to be supporting Th1.

Adequate production of WBCs depends on the self-renewal of hematopoietic stem cells (HSC’s). HSC’s require autophagy (proper clearing of debris) to self-renew. Autophagy depends on interferon gamma (a Th1 cytokine) and is inhibited by IL-4 (a Th2 cytokine). So, it makes sense to support/promote Th1 response and inhibit/downregulate Th2 response.

The Natural Killer cell activation that is driven by supplements such as astragalus, andrographis, ganoderma is a co-promoter with Th1 activation, so supporting an adequate innate immune response is also a good idea.
With regard to cancer, if you dig into the literature, you’ll see that immunologically, it is a good idea to be supporting Th1 response. So, increasing wbc count is driven by Th1 response and likewise improving immune surveillance against cancer cells also involves promoting the adequacy of the Th1 response.

Adaptogens (astragalus, holy basil, etc), medicinal mushrooms, greens powder, Berberine, and a few other supplements can be very helpful in supporting a Th1 immune response.
