Hello dear, Marla, I have a question. My mom is postmenopausal and has hypothyroidism she is on medication for it tho, her blood pressure sometimes goes up too. Now my question is about the redness /hotness she gets on her face. It started 2 years ago all of the sudden like a big hot flash that makes her feel very hot on her face and gets red cheeks and nose and it lasts for 30/60 minutes sometimes longer sometimes shorter, it does subside after the first 30 minutes but it takes longer until it totally goes away. It happens almost every day mostly afternoon /night time sometimes during the day too. Even her eyes look like she has been crying during the hot wave. She is gluten and dairy-free. Would you please tell me whether you can tell what it is that is going on what is it or what causes it, please?

Also, would nutritional yeast unfortified/ fortified  (which one is better) be a good idea for her to consume due to the thyroid issue she has? Please help and thank you in advance. God bless

I cant say for sure what is going on as I am not a doctor so cannot diagnose. That being said, Hot flashes (often paired with red skin) are triggered mostly by imbalance in female hormones (menopause) and too much cortisol.

I never recommend nutritional yeast as it can create too much yeast in the body. For hormones, she would need to look into supporting her menopausally. Often times vitex can be very helpful but always check with your doctor before supplementing. Ashwaghanda, maca, and holy basil are great or thyroid and lowering cortisol. Applying peppermint essential oil to the back of the neck (diluted with coconut) can also help cool the body down during the hot flash.

Lastly, check with her doctor to look into hormones and see what is really going on!

Thank you so much for your help, do you think liver cleanse with the herbal supplement from the brand (renew life) the liver detox two phases would be a good idea for her? She has never done one so would that be safe? Also is black walnut safe for her bcoz of the hypothyroidism she has?  It says it’s a good source of iodine but she is on meds and was wondering whether she can use black walnut sometime in the future?

I am not familiar with her case so cant recommend herbs as they can sometimes strain the liver if the liver is inflamed or overburdened. Perhaps a more gentle cleanse with lemon water may be beneficial? she can incorporate liver supporting foods such as dandelion greens (brocclli rabe), beetroot, jerusalem artichokes, lemon and grapefruit, etc. black walnut is OK for hypothyroidism but should never be taken unless she is on liver support, antivirals and binders.

Hi, Marla in regards to my mom’s red face she started taking vitex started with 5 mg and slowly increased it to 15 mg her hot flashes calmed for 2-3 months but lately they have gotten the same as in the beginning .. Do you have any suggestions please should she stop the vitex, should she increase it or take a break or something? her cheeks are red too and these hot flashes last for more than 30 min at a time. She has low thyroid issues too and is on medication for it. She eats very healthy gluten-free sugar-free low carb, please help

the thyroid medication could have side effects so look into those. and she can try increasing vitex if it helped her before as she may have just gotten used to the dosage and needs a stronger one now. id also recommend maca and Schisandra berry!
