Can you tell me what role histamine methyltransferase has in the degradation of histamine? I read your others posts about DAO and most importantly ALDH, but am curious about both histamine methyltransferase and histamine oxidase. I am pretty sure ALDH and histamine oxidase use the same substrates and probably if you help one, you help both of them, but can you comment on how essential histamine methyltransferase is and what co-factors may be needed to assist production in those people with histamine burdens from either over-manufacturing or lack of degradation or both.
    Thank you.

HNMT converts histamine to N-methylhistamine. The methyl group donation is from SAMe (this is an interesting role for SAMe in people with histamine problems. You’ll sometimes see that adding SAMe can be useful in these individuals, particularly if they have snp’s related to folate and B12 that make it hard for them to make SAMe).

HNMT scavenges intracellular histamine, not extracellular histamine, so for people for whom mast cell degranulation and histamine release is an issue, this may be less of a factor. Still, if the patient is struggling, it’s worth seeing if SAMe is useful.
