    Hey marla,

A friend of mine (31) was diagnosed with juvenile idiopatic arthritis.
She is on the biological medications Humira (adalimumab). She is always sick and the doctors told her that she should not take anything natural for enhancing immunity, because this could work against medications. Her wish is to be without medications.
Is she able to take things like curcumin, vitamin C, vitamin D? What do you think?

    Thank you

    Hey Sarah,

My experience has been that it’s useful to apply natural approaches to augment the effectiveness of biologics. In many cases, changing the persons underlying biology can be effective in allowing them to make good use of lower doses of biologics, or only needing the biologics when there is a flare, instead of using them all the time.
I am not aware of a biological basis for the concern about interaction with natural supplements however each case must be understood individually and I do not work with your friends so I would suggest she follower her practitioners advice.

Side note, I work with several pediatric patients with JRA. With what I’ve seen, all of those patients have tested positive for persistent infections and the most appropriate therapies were antimicrobials while tapering off the humira. Unfortunately while on the Humira, she is more likely to test negative to Ab testing for infections. Definitely have her find a practitioners who can do a full work up for tick borne diseases, mycoplasma pneumonia, viral panel, and nutritional deficiencies. As for treatments, her practitioner should test for infections, even if negative, still suspect especially with immune suppressant drugs on board.

I know this wasnt a DIRECT answer to what you asked but I hope it helps guide your friend 🙂
