    Hi marla,
I have read the article “Biological plausibility for interactions between dietary fat, resveratrol, ACE2, and SARS-CoV illness severity” (https://journals.physiology.org/doi/full/10.1152/ajpendo.00150.2020) in which it said a high intake of resveratrol will upregulate ACE2 while a high intake of Dietary Fat will downregulate ACE2.

It is my understanding that COVID19 needs to enter the cell via the ACE2 receptor for replication of the virus. With upregulation of ACE2, will this makes the COVID19 entrance into the cell easier ?

I am a bit confused as to whether the upregulating of ACE2 by high intake of resveratrol is protective or counter-protective.

Would love to hear your thoughts.

    Great question!

Here is some basic understanding of how ACE2 works:
    1. Virus enters lung epithelia and cardiac endothelia via ACE2.
    2. You could try to lower ACE2 expression levels in cells, but you wouldn’t get it down far enough to prevent infection. If three windows are open instead of 12, the bugs still get in.
    3. Those with greater expression of ACE2 have better survival if they get severe disease.
So, you can’t get ACE2 low enough to prevent infection, and if you lower it, the patient is left less able to survive the infection.
So, look for ways to increase rather than decreasing ACE2.

    Hope this helps!
